PWM isn't really mysterious. It's just a string of continuous pulses at a pre-set rate (frequency, measured in Hz), with the amount of time each pulse spends at 12 volts or 0 volts (duty cycle) determining how fast the fan or pump runs. The problem is, there isn't any “standard” form of PWM. The fan or pump manufacturer determines the frequency, as well as whether the device will run faster if the 12V time in each cycle increases (positive PWM) or faster if the 0V time increases (negative PWM). With automobile fans and pumps, this can run the gamut from 2 Hz positive for a Cooper turbo pump to 128 Hz negative for a Corvette C6 radiator fan. This can make changing brands of e-fan or mixing brands of fans and pumps on the same PWM line a real headache. No more! The PCA can adjust both the frequency and polarity of any PWM signal to allow mating virtually any ECU or controller to any brushless fan or pump. It can make that Cooper and C6 run off the same line, make the C6 ECU talk to the Cooper pump, or anything in between!
